The War of the Silver Marches

What began as an orcish expansion under the Kingdom of Many-Arrows escalated into a brutal, multi-front war orchestrated by the Drow of House Baenre. The Drow wizard Tsabrak Xorlarrin cast a ritual known as "The Darkening," which cloaked the Silver Marches in perpetual shadow, allowing orcs, frost giants, and white dragons to assault the surface world with impunity. The cities of Sundabar and Nesmé were utterly sacked, and the great dwarfholds of Citadel Adbar and Mithral Hall were placed under crushing sieges.

The tide only turned in the spring of 1485 DR when King Bruenor Battlehammer united the northern dwarven clans to retake the River Subrin bridge. Following an air battle won by Drizzt Do'Urden, the "Darkening" was dispelled, and the invading armies were routed. However, the political cost was catastrophic: the confederation of Luruar (the Silver Marches) dissolved in the aftermath, as the dwarves blamed Silverymoon for its perceived lack of aid. The war effectively ended the dream of a united Northern kingdom, leaving a landscape of bitter veterans and deep-seated racial tensions.
