The Murder of Mystra

In a plot orchestrated by the goddess Shar, the god Cyric assassinated the Second Mystra in her celestial heartland, Dweomerheart. This was not just a murder; it was the total destruction of the "Mother of All Magic." Without the Goddess to maintain the Weave, the interface between the mortal mind and raw magic completely disintegrated. Dweomerheart collapsed, sending ripples of blue fire across the cosmos in an event that became known as the Spellplague.

Across Faerûn, this manifested as a literal wall of blue flame that reshaped the continents, melted mountains, and mutated living creatures into "spellscarred" monstrosities. Arcane casters either went mad, died, or found themselves powerless as their ancient formulas no longer functioned. This catastrophic event effectively ended the "Classic" era of Faerûn, plunging the world into a dark age of magical uncertainty and geographical isolation that lasted nearly a hundred years.
