The Rite of the Resurrection: The Regent’s Ascension
In the final months before the blue fire fell, Szass Tam attempted his most daring gamble: the "Rite of the Resurrection," a ritual designed to sacrifice every living soul in Thay to fuel his ascension to godhood. Though a band of desperate heroes managed to disrupt the final incantation, the magical backlash was catastrophic. The ritual "stalled" just as the Murder of Mystra occurred, and the collapsing Weave merged with Tam's necromantic energies.
The result was the total transformation of Thay. Tam failed to become a god, but he successfully became the "Eternal Regent." The magical surge killed thousands of living Thayans, immediately raising them as intelligent undead loyal only to him. In the wake of this disaster, Tam officially declared Thay a necropolis-state. He abolished the old laws, replacing them with a singular decree: the living are merely cattle and raw material, and the dead are the true citizens of his new, eternal empire.
