The Time of Troubles

The Age of Upheaval began with the "Arrival of the Gods." Due to the theft of the Tablets of Fate, the Overgod Ao cast the entire pantheon out of the heavens, forcing them to inhabit mortal forms known as Avatars. For several months, the physical world was ravaged as gods battled one another for power, resulting in the permanent deaths of several major deities—including Bane, Bhaal, Myrkul, and the original Mystra.

This period fundamentally changed the relationship between mortals and the divine. The resulting chaos saw the mortal Cyric and Kelemvor ascend to godhood, and the laws of magic became temporarily "wild" until the new Mystra (Midnight) was chosen. For those living in Faerûn, this was a time of pure terror where the sky literally fell, and it established the precedent for the instability that would plague the Realms for the next century.
