The Return of the Dead Three

In a shocking theological shift, the ancient gods of murder, tyranny, and death—Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul—were discovered to be active on Toril in "quasi-divine" mortal forms. No longer residing in the heavens as full deities, they now stalked the world as powerful stalkers and cult leaders.

Their return fueled the rise of new, more violent cults, most notably in the city of Baldur's Gate. This "Descent to Earth" of the Dead Three created a climate of paranoia and dread, as the gods of evil were no longer distant figures to be prayed against, but physical threats that could be encountered in the shadows of an alleyway.
