The Year of Rogue Dragons

The lich Sammaster, founder of the Cult of the Dragon, manipulated the ancient Dracorage Mythal—a millennia-old elven curse designed to curb draconic power. By binding his own phylactery to the mythal, Sammaster triggered a "Rage" that was intended to be permanent, driving every dragon across Faerûn into a state of feral, homicidal madness. His goal was to force chromatic dragons to choose between a life of insanity or "eternal life" as dracoliches under his command.

The resulting devastation was unprecedented; ancient wyrms that had slept for centuries descended upon cities like Melvaunt and Silverymoon. The crisis only ended after an unlikely coalition of dragon hunters, led by the half-golem Dorn Graybrook and the gold dragon King Tamarand, infiltrated the mythal’s capstone in the Novularond mountains. Their victory resulted in the permanent destruction of the mythal on Nightal 6, ending the cycle of dracorage forever, but leaving the dragon populations of the world permanently thinned and suspicious of mortal interference.
